Do ordinary Americans really have the power to work creatively with their myths? Can they innovate new variants on the national myths, new interpretations, or even whole new myths of their own? Do they not merely repeat what they have been fed by elite leaders and testing examples, the mass media? And are the field mass media themselves not merely creating myths at the bidding of the elite leaders who control them? To be sure, there is neuropsychological testing some truth in this view. Wealthy white Protestant men have historically had more control than anyone else over America’s myths.
