And, if we help others in the process we all learn so much more about slaughterhouse, ourselves and each other. ?? ??? ?? ??? ????.??? ? ??? ?? ??? ? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ? ??? ?????.???? ??? ??? ??? ??? ?? ?? ??? ???? ??? ??? ??? ?? ??? ??? ???? ?? ??? ??? ????.

You must, however, make it obvious which side you are arguing for 5 film . If you can, it's great to put the argument in terms of a larger debate—we'll discuss that later. The US Market Essay! 2) Development Support : In a 12-scoring essay, [d]evelopment of ideas and support for slaughterhouse 5 film claims deepen insight and spread broaden context. An integrated line of skillful reasoning and illustration effectively conveys the significance of the argument. Qualifications and complications enrich and bolster ideas and analysis. 3) Organization : A 12-scoring essay exhibits a skillful organizational strategy.

Word choice is skillful and precise. American Weddings! Sentence structures are consistently varied and clear. Stylistic and register choices, including voice and slaughterhouse 5 film tone, are strategic and effective. While a few minor errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics may be present, they do not impede understanding. This can be the hardest area for students to improve in (particularly if English is not their native language). Word choice is skillful and precise does include using fancy vocabulary, but it also means not repeating yourself. Using consistently varied and clear sentence structures means not only not starting every sentence the same way (e.g. Machines are helpful to humans.
Machines can also cause problems. Machines are the answer to our future), but also making sure your sentences are clear and further your logic (rather than making it more difficult to understand). Analysis Of Woman In The Examples! It's better to be clear than to slaughterhouse, be fancy. This is something you can fix when you revise your essay in the last 2-4 minutes of the essay section. What ACT, Inc.
Doesn't Tell You: 3 Secrets. Even though the ACT essay has some clear published guidelines, there are a few secrets that most students don't know and discharge planning that can give you a major advantage on the test. These are facts that ACT, Inc. doesn't want to be too well-known because it helps us develop ACT Writing strategies that may give us an edge over people who haven't prepared. Slaughterhouse 5 Film! 1) You Don't Need to miles kimball catalog, Know the Facts. You can make up whatever information you need to support your point. Really. As with the tip above, if you know the real facts, that's great (since the grader will probably know them too), but it's not required. This might sound crazy.
You could write about 5 film, how Germany won World War II, and the ACT graders are not allowed to planning, penalize you. Why is this? ACT, Inc. doesn't have the resources to do fact-checking on every single essay. Slaughterhouse 5 Film! With over amoretti, a million students taking the test every year, graders only have a few minutes to put a score of 1-6 to each of the 4 essay scoring domains. They can't check whether Martin Luther King was born in 1929 or 1925.
Thus, ACT essay scoring uses a simpler rule--all statements are taken as truth. The important point is that the evidence needs to support your thesis. (Of course, ACT, Inc. doesn't want people to know about this - that would make the ACT essay sound silly.) If you're short on examples to 5 film, prove a point, make up something realistic-sounding (you can even pretend a newspaper or politician said something they didn't), and slap it in there. Spenser Amoretti! It's much better than trying to write a vague paragraph without concrete evidence. 2) You Should Write More Than a Page. This is one of the most important ACT Writing tips. There is a strong relationship between essay length and score - the slaughterhouse 5 film, longer your essay, the better your score. In a short essay, it's difficult for Essay you to develop your points well enough to earn a decent score. Really, you should write a page and a half if at all possible. Although ACT, Inc. never explicitly mentions that length matters in ACT essay scoring, it does.
And if you can write more than a page and a half without repeating yourself or digressing from your point, you'll be in really good shape. 5 Film! 3) Your First Paragraph and Conclusion Matter More Than the Middle. The introduction and conclusion are the bookends of the essay: they hold it together and are guaranteed to Essay, be read more closely than the rest of the slaughterhouse 5 film, essay. Analysis In The! ACT graders have to read a lot of essays very quickly, and they give most of them a 3 or a 4 in each domain. The fastest way for them to score an essay is to find the thesis (to make sure that it's there, that it answers the slaughterhouse 5 film, prompt, and discharge planning that the slaughterhouse 5 film, rest of the essay supports it) and then skim the first and last paragraphs. Here's why: if a student's introduction and conclusion paragraphs are well-written and weddings logical, it's likely the rest of the 5 film, essay will be too. By reading these parts, the grader can usually tell with confidence what the score will be.
They'll scan the middle to make sure it makes sense, but they probably won't read every word as closely. On the other hand, if you don't have time to write an introduction or conclusion, you will be heavily penalized. It'll be hard to to Strengthening, score above an 8 without an introduction and conclusion, particularly if you don't make your thesis, or point of view, clear in 5 film, the first paragraph. This might be the of woman Good, most important ACT essay tip we can give you. A strong ACT writing strategy includes preparing enough time to slaughterhouse, write and revise your introduction and conclusion paragraphs, as we explain below. Key Strategy: How to Write A Successful ACT Essay in Market Essay, 40 Minutes. Because you only have 40 minutes to write the ACT essay, you need to 5 film, have a game plan before you start the test. Here's a step by step guide on how to discharge planning, write an effective ACT essay.
Overcoming the Biggest Obstacle: Planning Your Argument Methodically. One of the things that students often find hardest about the essay is quickly thinking of support for the thesis. But it can be done in a simple, methodical way, which we explain below. 5 Film! Let's start with a sample prompt. Many of the goods and services we depend on daily are now supplied by intelligent, automated machines rather than human beings.
Robots build cars and other goods on assembly lines, where once there were human workers. Many of our phone conversations are now conducted not with people but with sophisticated technologies. We can now buy goods at a variety of stores without the Analysis of woman in The Good examples, help of a human cashier. 5 Film! Automation is generally seen as a sign of of woman Good Earth examples, progress, but what is lost when we replace humans with machines? Given the accelerating variety and prevalence of intelligent machines, it is worth examining the implications and meaning of their presence in our lives. Read and carefully consider these perspectives. Each suggests a particular way of thinking about the increasing presence of 5 film, intelligent machines. Perspective One: What we lose with the weddings, replacement of people by slaughterhouse 5 film, machines is some part of american weddings, our own humanity.
Even our mundane daily encounters no longer require from us basic courtesy, respect, and tolerance for other people. Slaughterhouse! Perspective Two: Machines are good at low-skill, repetitive jobs, and at high-speed, extremely precise jobs. In both cases they work better than humans. This efficiency leads to discharge planning, a more prosperous and progressive world for everyone. Perspective Three: Intelligent machines challenge our long-standing ideas about what humans are or can be. 5 Film! This is good because it pushes both humans and machines toward new, unimagined possibilities. Spread Of Christianity! Write a unified, coherent essay about the increasing presence of slaughterhouse, intelligent machines. In your essay, be sure to: clearly state your own perspective on the issue and analyze the relationship between your perspective and at least one other perspective develop and support your ideas with reasoning and examples organize your ideas clearly and logically communicate your ideas effectively in standard written English. Your perspective may be in full agreement with any of the others, in partial agreement, or wholly different. In the prompt above, they give you three viewpoints so that you know what to mention in your discussion of various perspectives.
But you'll need to elaborate on these as well. Let's look at the viewpoints this prompt gives us. Conservative: Intelligent machines lead to problems, which is to Strengthening Housing Market, bad. Utilitarian: Intelligent machines allow us to slaughterhouse, be more efficient, which is good. Progressive: Intelligent machines lead to miles catalog, progress, which is good. Supporting each viewpoint is a slew of possible reasons, and these are what you want to lay out clearly in your essay. You can, of slaughterhouse 5 film, course, choose any side of the argument, but one is usually easier to catalog, argue than the other (because it is opposite the other two perspectives).
For this prompt, it's easier to slaughterhouse, argue against intelligent machines than to argue for their efficiency or progress, so we'll look at potential support for miles catalog online the conservative argument, which is that Intelligent machines lead to slaughterhouse, problems. Kimball Catalog! To argue against any change, we can point out its assumptions and how they are false, or its consequences and how they are bad: This method works for any argument. If you find yourself supporting the proposal in slaughterhouse 5 film, the prompt, say (to use a real ACT example) that a right to kimball catalog, avoid health risks is a more important freedom than the right to do whatever you want, then you just need to think of ways it would be positive. That can be much simpler. But you can still use the slaughterhouse, assumptions-and-consequences method above for amoretti the paragraph in which you address at least one other perspective. This is a tried and true structure for earning a great score on the ACT essay. Just by slaughterhouse 5 film, following this template and kimball catalog keeping in mind the ACT writing tips above, you're pretty much guaranteed a 6 or higher out of 12 (equivalent of an 18 or higher out of 36 on the September 2015-June 2016 Writing test) . Do a decent job and you'll easily get an 8 or higher. Here are a few real ACT prompts to keep in mind as we go through the steps: Intelligent machines : they're not good, they're good and slaughterhouse 5 film practical, or they're good and lead to progress.
Public health and individual freedom : freedom is more important than physical health, society should strive for the greatest good for the most people, or the spread of christianity, right to avoid health risks is more important than individual freedom. Decide on slaughterhouse, your thesis, choosing one of the kimball catalog, three sides. You can try to form your own, fourth perspective, but since you have to compare your perspective with at least one of the perspectives given you might as well argue for one of them and save some time for writing. Quickly brainstorm two or three reasons or examples that support your thesis. Brainstorm counterarguments for or analyses of at least one other perspective and your responses. Organize your essay. Slaughterhouse 5 Film! Make sure you order your points in a way that makes sense. Spenser! Check your time . Try to have 30 minutes left at slaughterhouse this point so you have enough time to write. If you don't, just keep in the US Housing, mind that you might have to slaughterhouse 5 film, cut out one of your supporting points.
1. American Weddings! Paragraph 1: Introduction Thesis. A) Write your introduction. If you can think of an interesting first sentence that brings your thesis into a larger discussion (say, of how intelligent machines have changed the way people interact with each other), start with that. B) Narrow down from the larger context to your specific response to the question (your thesis), which should be at or near the end of the first paragraph. 5 Film! C) It can be helpful to the reader to have your reasons and to Strengthening Housing Essay examples previewed in the introduction if it fits in well. 2. Paragraph 2: Transitions Opposing Perspective. Slaughterhouse 5 Film! A) When you start paragraph 2, try to think of kimball, a first sentence that refers back to the first paragraph. B) In contrast to my perspective, Perspective [X] claims that… is a simple example of an effective way to transition into the second paragraph. C) Then address one of the perspectives opposing yours and why its supporters are wrong or misguided.
In the example about slaughterhouse 5 film, intelligent machines above (where we've chosen to argue Perspective 1), you could argue against perspective 2 OR 3 in this paragraph. Earth! 3. Slaughterhouse! Body Paragraphs (those remaining before the conclusion): A) Introduce your first reason or example in support of the spenser, perspective you'll be discussing. B) In 3-5 sentences, explain your reasoning as to slaughterhouse 5 film, how this perspective relates to your own (using explanations of american weddings, your thinking or specific examples to support the point). C) Connect your example to the thesis and then state that it supports your thesis. D) Check your time . 5 Film! Try to have 7 minutes left by american weddings, this point. AA) (Optional) Relate your two or three examples back to your thesis. Add one or two sentences if you want. A) End with a restatement of your thesis or a return to your first lines to wrap up the essay. 5 Film! Hopefully, you still have 2-4 minutes to read over your essay.
In this time, you can do several things. A) You can, of course, correct mistakes. B) You can replace dull words with fancier words. C) You can make sure that your introduction and conclusion match by stating the A Commitment Housing Market, same thesis (in different words, of course). Notice the two bolded time-checking steps. It's very easy to get caught in the planning stage and run out of 5 film, time on your actual essay, which is easy to avoid if you practice checking your time. If you have to make a choice between explaining a perspective or writing a conclusion paragraph, always choose the explanation. You can get by with a short sentence for a conclusion, and you can make a strong essay with a clear thesis in your introduction, but if you leave out the analysis of the relationship between your perspective and one of the ACT's perspectives in your essay, you'll lose a lot of points. Now you practice. Print out the template above, consult our ACT Essay Prompts Article (or think of any controversial issue in of christianity, the world today), and get to work.
You may find that many issues can be argued using the same reasoning or examples. For instance, the slaughterhouse, argument that the benefits of the changes happening in the world don't necessarily outweigh the miles kimball online, problems they create can apply to many of the slaughterhouse, new ACT prompts. You can research concrete information to support this kind of useful argument, like a newspaper article about how the Industrial Revolution led to of woman Earth Essay examples, increased environmental destruction. Cases in Medical Ethics: Student-Led Discussions. I was a Hackworth Fellow for the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. Slaughterhouse 5 Film? I was also a pre-medical student, and am currently attending the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. During my senior year at Santa Clara, I led discussions on medical ethics with students interested in medicine. The purpose of miles kimball catalog these discussions was two-fold. First, they were created to help bring current ethical issues onto slaughterhouse 5 film, our campus. In The Examples? Second, they were intended to help students who were interested in a career in the health sciences determine whether or not medicine is 5 film their correct calling. Most of the discussions followed a simple format. Spenser Amoretti? One to two cases were formulated for the students to read. Then I presented the 5 film, students with various questions related to some of the ethical issues contained in the situations described. The following cases are the ones that I presented to the groups.
Each case also has a short history and summary of the ethical issues being reviewed. The questions I asked of the students are included as well. These cases and questions are public domain, and can be re-used or modified for educational purposes. I hope that you find them useful, and that they spawn the same thoughtful enjoyment in you as they did in me. Note: The cases were not based on specific events. However, it is possible that they share similarities with actual events. Spread? These similarities were not intended. Autonomy essentially means self rule, and it is a patient's most basic right. As such, it is a health care worker's responsibility to respect the 5 film, autonomy of her patients. However, at times this can be difficult because it can conflict with the paternalistic attitude of many health care professionals. The following two cases address patient autonomy.
The first involves the rights of an individual to decide her own fate, even against her physicians' judgments. The second case involves the rights of a parent to care for her child in the manner that she sees fit. A woman enters the emergency room with stomach pain. She undergoes a CT scan and is diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm, a weakening in the wall of the of woman Good Essay, aorta which causes it to stretch and bulge (this is very similar to what led to 5 film John Ritter's death). The physicians inform her that the only way to fix the problem is surgically, and planning that the chances of survival are about 50/50. They also inform her that time is slaughterhouse of the essence, and online that should the aneurysm burst, she would be dead in a few short minutes. The woman is an 5 film, erotic dancer; she worries that the surgery will leave a scar that will negatively affect her work; therefore, she refuses any surgical treatment. Of Christianity? Even after much pressuring from the physicians, she adamantly refuses surgery. Feeling that the woman is not in her correct state of mind and knowing that time is of the essence, the surgeons decide to perform the procedure without consent. They anesthetize her and surgically repair the aneurysm.
She survives, and sues the hospital for slaughterhouse 5 film, millions of dollars. Do you believe that the physician's actions can be justified in spread, any way? Is there anything else that they could have done? Is it ever right to take away someone's autonomy? (Would a court order make the physicians' decisions ethical?) What would you do if you were one of the health care workers? You are a general practitioner and a mother comes into your office with her child who is complaining of flu-like symptoms.
Upon entering the room, you ask the boy to remove his shirt and you notice a pattern of slaughterhouse 5 film very distinct bruises on spread, the boy's torso. You ask the mother where the 5 film, bruises came from, and she tells you that they are from spread of christianity, a procedure she performed on slaughterhouse, him known as cao gio, which is also known as coining. The procedure involves rubbing warm oils or gels on a person's skin with a coin or other flat metal object. Housing Market Essay? The mother explains that cao gio is used to raise out bad blood, and improve circulation and slaughterhouse healing. When you touch the boy's back with your stethoscope, he winces in miles, pain from the bruises.
You debate whether or not you should call Child Protective Services and 5 film report the mother. Questions for Case 2: Should we completely discount this treatment as useless, or could there be something gained from it? When should a physician step in to stop a cultural practice? (If someone answers when it harms the weddings, child remind that person that there is some pain in 5 film, many of our medical procedures, for example, having one's tonsils removed) Should the physician be concerned about alienating the kimball catalog, mother and other people of slaughterhouse 5 film her ethnicity from modern medicine? Do you think that the physician should report the mother? In the video, one of the physicians says that burn patients are incompetent to make decisions when they first enter the hospital because they are in such a great deal of pain. However, patients such as Dax can be in a great deal of spread pain for a very long time.
In such cases, what should be done to slaughterhouse determine competence, and when should this be done? Do you think the fact that Dax could not see a future for himself should have been taken into of christianity, account when determining his competency? Could this have clouded his judgment? (He thought that he would end up on the street corner selling pencils) Do you think that the fact that Dax was going to slaughterhouse recover, and had the possibility of miles living a happy life, made not treating Dax like suicide… or murder? What if he did not have this possibility? After his recovery, Dax attempted suicide. Should the physicians have let him die?
Is it ever correct for a doctor to allow a patient to kill himself? Do you ever think that it is correct for a physician to break a competent patient's autonomy? If so, is this one of 5 film those cases? Do you think that in american, this case, that the ends justified the means? The word euthanasia draws its roots from Greek meaning good death. As it is used in this discussion, it means the act of ending the life of a person suffering from either a terminal illness, or an incurable disease.
The AMA is against physicians assisting in euthanasia. There is currently only one state in the US that allows for euthanasia, and slaughterhouse 5 film that is spread of christianity Oregon, where in 1997, the Death With Dignity Act went into effect. Slaughterhouse 5 Film? Euthanasia advocates stress that it should be allowed as an extension of a person's autonomy. To Strengthening? Those who are against euthanasia often say that it can lead to the devaluation of human life, and to a slippery slope in which the old and disabled will be killed on the whims of slaughterhouse 5 film healthy people. We examined one case and spread of christianity the Oregon law to slaughterhouse 5 film view the ethics of euthanasia.
A woman was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (the same. disease that Stephen Hawking has) 5 years ago. This is spread a condition that destroys motor nerves, making control of movement impossible, while the mind is virtually unaffected. People with motor neurone disease normally die within 4 years of 5 film diagnosis from spread, suffocation due to the inability of the inspiratory muscles to contract. The woman's condition has steadily declined. She is not expected to slaughterhouse live through the planning, month, and is worried about the pain that she will face in her final hours. She asks her doctor to give her diamorphine for pain if she begins to suffocate or choke. This will lessen her pain, but it will also hasten her death.
About a week later, she falls very ill, and is having trouble breathing. Questions for 5 film, Case 1: Does she have a right to make this choice, especially in view of the fact that she will be dead in a short while (say six hours)? Is this choice an extension of her autonomy? Is the short amount of time she has to live ethically relevant? Is there an ethical difference between her dying in 6 hours and spread of christianity dying in slaughterhouse, a week? What about a year, and how do you draw this distinction? Is the right for a patient's self-determination powerful enough to american create obligations on the part of others to aid her so that she can exercise her rights? She clearly cannot kill herself.
She can't move, but should someone be FORCED to slaughterhouse help her, or to find someone to help her? Should the money used to care for this woman be taken into account when she is being helped?
